Case Study | Kaydeli’s Energy-Efficient Ice Rink Cooling System for a Shopping Mall in Sichuan

kaydeli Ice Rink Cooling System.jpg

Ice rinks and skating venues face challenges such as high energy costs and complex maintenance. According to the 2025 Commercial Building Carbon Emission Accounting Guidelines, ice rinks are classified as Category B high-emission scenarios due to potential refrigerant leakage, year-round cooling demands, and heavy reliance on electricity—ranking just below Category A facilities like data centers and chemical labs. Therefore, energy efficiency and carbon reduction in skating venues have become urgent priorities.

Project Background

Located in an international shopping mall in Sichuan, this ice rink covers 1,000㎡ (50m×20m) and operates year-round, serving 800–1,000 visitors daily. The system must balance public recreation and professional training needs. With summer outdoor temperatures exceeding 35°C and significant thermal load fluctuations indoors, the cooling system must deliver high capacity and stability to maintain ice quality and indoor comfort.

Design Solution

Kaydeli’s engineers conducted on-site assessments and selected:

2 air-cooled screw chillers (280kW each, semi-hermetic, R513A refrigerant, -15°C evaporation temp).

A hybrid air/water-cooled design: Natural cooling via outdoor air in winter; water-cooling tower assistance in summer. Annual COP: 3.8.

Ice Rink Specifications:

Ice construction: 30mm base layer (8-hour freezing); DN25 stainless steel coils (80mm spacing, counterflow circulation).

Antifreeze: 40% glycol solution (-23°C freeze point, 100m³/h flow rate).

Smart control: Real-time monitoring of ice temp, flow rate, and compressor current; automatic backup activation during faults.

Maintenance: Modular design with integrated pumps, valves, and insulation tanks. Short installation time, low annual upkeep costs.

Heat recovery: A waste-heat reuse system was installed to supply hot water without affecting cooling performance.

✔ Best for: Large commercial rinks (≥2,000㎡) or year-round operations.

✔ Advantages:

High efficiency: COP 4.2–4.8.

Superior load stability: Handles high visitor density and thermal loads.

3. Glycol Low-Temp Chillers

✔ Core feature: Antifreeze circulation (freeze point ≤-20°C).

✔ Advantages:

Uniform ice surface: ±0.5°C precision (meets ISU competition standards).

Extreme cold resilience: Maintains hardness at -30°C.
